Elia Named NY First Woman Education Commissioner

MaryEllen EliaALBANY, NY – New York’s Board of Regents has named MaryEllen Elia as the state’sĀ first woman education commissioner.

For more than ten years, Ms. Elia led the Hillsborough County school district in Florida, where she won $100 million from Gates Foundation to overhaul teacher evaluations and made headlines for union collaboration. She was named Florida superintendent of the year last December by the Florida Association of District School Superintendents.

Ms. Elia graduated from the University of Buffalo and Daemen College. She started her teaching career in Amherst.
