The Obama-Biden New Energy for America Plan aimed to put 1 million Plug-in Hybrid cars on America’s roads by 2015. In California today there are approximately 10,000 of these energy-efficient environmentally friendly vehicles traveling the tarmac, but on January 27 the California Air Resources Board once again put the state in the number one position in the nation in the fight for a clean environment. A 9-0 vote firmly instated a set of “clean car” rules, expected to see 1.4 million zero- and low-emission vehicles in California’s auto showrooms within 12 years. The enactment of these new rules also means that by 2015, 15% of all new cars sold in the Golden State are required to emit little or no pollutants.

If you think about it, the one choice that we as consumers are most likely to make that has the potential to be the most damaging to our environment, the world that we are leaving to our kids, is the car we buy. To lessen our individual impact, choosing a vehicle with little or no dangerous emissions is the way of the future. The choices range from hydrogen fuel cell, electric and plug-in hybrid. The one I want to focus on is the hybrid car. The essential meaning of the word “hybrid” is the creation of something new by combining different and often incongruous elements. The seemingly incompatible elements that combine to power a hybrid car are a gas engine and an electric motor, creating an energy-efficient vehicle with low environmental impact.

So what have hybrid cars got to do with leadership? Well, what’s got me so excited is actually the potential for harnessing human hybrid power as a leader; and in my next blog I’ll explain exactly why. I’ll leave you with this quote from “A New Refutation of Time” by Jorge Luis Borges:

“Time is the substance from which I am made. Time is a river which carries me along, but I am the river; it is a tiger that devours me, but I am the tiger; it is a fire that consumes me, but I am the fire.”

You too are the river; the tiger; and the fire and you too have the potential to be a powerful, effective Hybrid Leader.
